ガストン・メリエス

ガストン・メリエス（Gaston Méliès、フランス語: [gastɔ̃ meljɛs]、1852年2月12日 - 1915年4月9日）は、おもにアメリカ合衆国で活動したフランスの映画監督。彼は、映画監督ジョルジュ・メリエスの兄であった。

経歴 編集

ガストンは、メリエス兄弟の長兄アンリ (Henri) とともに、パリで靴工場を営んでいた。フランスの戦争省との契約を得た彼らは、一攫千金の機会を得たものと思われた。しかし、運悪く、皮革の価格が急上昇し、彼らは費用に見合う製造ができなくなってしまった。工場は閉鎖され、メリエス兄弟は事業を失った[1]。

ジョルジュ・メリエスはフランスで映画の制作をおこない、その作品は世界中で人気を博した。一部の、特にアメリカ合衆国の映画配給事業者たちは、メリエス作品の著作権を侵害した。そこでジョルジュ・メリエスは、兄ガストンに、アメリカ合衆国に赴いて自身の著作権を保護してほしいと頼んだ。

ガストン・メリエスは、1902年にニューヨークへ到着し、スター・フィルムのアメリカ支社を立ち上げ、弟の映画作品を配給し始めた。1903年には、ガストン自身が映画制作を始め、おもにドキュメンタリーを手がけた。しかし、彼の作品は成功しなかった。1907年夏、ガストンはフランスに帰国し、ジョルジュとの事業に関する業務をおこなった。1907年9月11日、ガストンはオーテンス＝ルイーズ・ド・ミルモント (Hortense-Louise de Mirmont) と結婚したが、彼女はジョルジュ・メリエスの最初期の協力者のひとりであったルシアン・リューロス (Lucien Reulos) の妻の姉であった[2]。新婚間もないふたりは、結婚の数日後にはパリを離れ、ル・アーヴルから客船 La Savoie でニューヨークへ向かい、1907年9月28日に到着した。

一年間を通して映画制作ができる、冬でも暖かい気候を求め、メリエスはスター・フィルムをテキサス州サンアントニオに移し、20エーカーの土地を借りて、そこにあった2階建ての建物と大きな納屋が「スター・フィルム・ランチ ("Star Film Ranch")」と称される映画スタジオとなった[1]。メリエスは、監督した作品のうち2作品でに出演もしており、いずれも1911年に制作された『The Immortal Alamo』と『The Kiss of Mary Jane』で司祭役を演じた。

1911年4月、他の映画スタジオがカリフォルニア州へと移転していく流れに乗り、ガストンは会社をカリフォルニア州サンタポーラ（英語版）に移した。

1912年から1913年にかけて、メリエスはアジア太平洋を旅行し[3]、家族や映画撮影クルーなど20人近くを引き連れて、フランス領ポリネシア、ニュージーランド、オーストラリア、タヒチ島、インドネシア、シンガポール[4]、カンボジア、日本などでエキゾチックな主題を探して撮影をおこなった[5]。1912年7月から1913年5月にかけての、この旅の間、ガストン・メリエスは64本の映画作品を撮影して、ニューヨークにいた息子ポール (Paul) に撮影済みのフィルムを送ったが、フィルムは途中で破損したり、使用不能になることも多かった。ガストンは、トーマス・エジソンの会社に対してスター・フィルムが負っていた作品供給の責務を果たせなくなった。ガストンは5万ドルを失い、制作をやめた。カリフォルニア州へ赴いた彼は、スター・フィルムのアメリカ支社をヴァイタグラフ・スタジオ（英語版）に売却して、ヨーロッパへ戻った。ジョルジュは自身の経済的困窮をガストンのせいだと非難していたが、兄弟ふたりは二度と口を利かなかった。

1913年冬、メリエスは妻とともにコルシカ島へ移り住んだ。彼は、1915年4月9日にコルシカ島で、「貝毒に当たって」死去した。亡骸は、1915年4月14日に、パリ、モンマルトルのサン＝ヴィンセント墓地にあった2番目の妻の一族であるド・ミルモント家の墓に埋葬された[2]。
