コロンビア万歳
コロンビア万歳（ヘイル・コロンビア、Hail, Columbia）は、アメリカ合衆国の愛国歌のひとつであり、1931年に『星条旗』が公式な国歌に定められるまで事実上の国歌として扱われていた。現在では必ずしも知名度の高い曲とは言えないが[1]、アメリカ合衆国副大統領のための公式の行進曲である[1][2]。副大統領が出席する公式行事で頻繁に演奏されている。

題名の「コロンビア」は詩においてアメリカ合衆国を指すのに使用される[3]。他の愛国歌である『コロンビア・大洋の宝』も同様にコロンビアを題名とする。
曲はドイツ系の移民作曲家であるフィリップ・ファイル (Philip Phile) によって1789年に作曲され、「大統領行進曲」あるいは「ワシントン行進曲」と呼ばれた[4]。この曲は同年アメリカ合衆国初代大統領に就任したジョージ・ワシントンをたたえるために作曲されたと言われている[3][2]。曲は1793年に出版された[4][2]。
1798年、有名なフランシス・ホプキンソンの子で法曹のジョゼフ・ホプキンソン (Joseph Hopkinson) は、フィラデルフィアの歌手で俳優だったギルバート・フォックスの求めに応じて「大統領行進曲」に歌詞を加えた。これが『コロンビア万歳』である[4][2]。この版は1798年4月25日にフィラデルフィアの新劇場 (Chestnut Street Theatre) で初演され、大成功した[4][2]。当時のアメリカはXYZ事件に揺れ、フランスとの戦争の瀬戸際にあって愛国心が高まっていた[1][3][2]。その後1890年ごろまで、約100年間にわたって『コロンビア万歳』は事実上のアメリカ合衆国国歌であった[4]。
1890年代には『星条旗』が軍隊の儀式で用いられるようになり、また国旗の掲揚と降納においても演奏することが義務付けられた[5]。 1908年、議会は国歌の候補として『星条旗』、『コロンビア万歳』、『アメリカ』、『ヤンキードゥードゥル』の4曲をあげ、アメリカ議会図書館長のオスカー・ソネック (Oscar Sonneck) に調査を依頼した[6]。1931年3月3日に『星条旗』が正式な国歌に定められた[5]。
他の愛国歌である『アメリカ』や『星条旗』の音楽がいずれもイギリスの伝統音楽を使用しているのに対し（『アメリカ』は『国王陛下万歳』の替え歌、『星条旗』も『天国のアナクレオンへ』の替え歌）、『コロンビア万歳』は作詞と作曲がともにアメリカで行われたところに特徴がある[2]。
現在では、大統領の入場曲として『大統領万歳』が、副大統領の入場曲として本曲が使用される。このことは1969年8月1日に正式に決定された[1]。
