Nederlands: In 1643 vertrekt het jacht Breskens samen met het fluitschip Castricum uit Batavia op ontdekkingsreis naar nog onbekende gebieden in noordoost-Azië. De schepen raken elkaar kwijt tijdens een storm en de schipper van de Breskens, Schaep, besluit een Japanse baai binnen te varen om daar water te verversen. De Japanse overheid heeft sinds de verplaatsing van de Nederlandse handelspost naar Deshima, in 1641, haar beleid veranderd. Schipper Schaep en de bemanningsleden die aan land zijn gegaan worden gearresteerd en naar Edo gebracht. Omdat ze Nederlands zijn worden ze goed behandeld. Nadat de situatie is verduidelijkt besluiten de Japanse autoriteiten hen vrij te laten. Wel is duidelijk dat in de toekomst zelfs Nederlanders niet zomaar aan land kunnen gaan in Japan. English: In 1643, the yacht Breskens and the flyboat Castricum left Batavia (present-day Jakarta) on an exploratory expedition to as yet unknown regions in northwest Asia. The ships lost each other during a storm and Hendrick Cornelisz Schaep, the master of the Breskens, decided to enter a Japanese bay to replenish the ship’s supply of water. Since relocating the Dutch trading post to Deshima in 1641, the Japanese authorities had changed their policy. Master Schaep and those members of his crew who went ashore, were arrested and transferred to Edo. Because they were Dutch, they were treated well. Once the situation was clarified, the Japanese authorities decided to release them. However, it became clear that even the Dutch could no longer just go ashore in Japan. |
