マイルズ・ジョセフ・バークリー

マイルズ・ジョセフ・バークリー（Miles Joseph Berkeley、1803年4月1日 - 1889年7月30日）は、イギリスの植物学者、聖職者である。植物病理学の創設者の1人である。

生涯

ノーサンプトンシャーのベネフィールド、ビギン・ホールに生まれた。ラグビー校、ケンブリッジ大学のクライスツ・カレッジで学んだ。聖職者となり、1837年からApethorpeで聖職者として働き、1868年にMarket Harboroughの近くのSibbertoftの教区牧師となった。早い時期から博物学研究と標本収集を行いZoological JournalやMagazine of Natural Historyに論文を寄稿した。地衣類の研究に熱心に取組み、1857年に『隠花植物入門』（"Introduction to Cryptogamic Botany"）を出版し、1854年にGardener's Chronicleに野菜の病理学の論文を発表し、カビ・細菌や植物病理学のイギリスにおける権威者として知られるようになった。1883年にクライスト・カレッジから植物学の名誉研究員の称号を受けた。菌類学の分野で6000あまりのカビ・細菌の体系的研究をおこなった。

顕微鏡を使って藻類や菌類の正確な多くの図を描き、コケを研究したことで知られ、植物病理学の分野ではエキビョウキンに冒されたジャガイモや、ブドウ類のうどん粉病など、野菜・果樹の病気の先駆的な研究を行ない植物病理学に貢献した。9000あまりの標本をキュー植物園に残した。1879年に王立協会の会員に選ばれ、1863年にロイヤル・メダルを受賞した。
