ContextObjects in Spans（または短縮形でCOinS）は、画面上に表示されないOpenURLのContextObjectをウェブページに埋め込む方法です。利用者はクライアントソフトウェアを使用して書誌情報のメタデータを取得したり、OpenURLのリゾルバで出典へのリンクを検索できます。OpenURLを直接提供するのではなくCOinSをすることへの利点としては、クライアントソフトウェアがリゾルバを選べることが挙げられます。これにより、利用者は特定の図書館から書籍を検索することができます。
COinSは機械可読な書誌情報であり、ウィキペディアに組み入れられています。その使い道は2つあります：
- 書誌情報はOpenURLに変換することができ、そのOpenURLはローカルのOpenURLリゾルバで名前解決できます。例えば、LibX、OpenURLリファラ[1]、またはMozilla Firefoxにインストールされた同様の拡張機能やブックマークレットを使うことで、ウィキペディア記事の「出典」「参考文献」節にある多くの書籍や学術雑誌記事の後ろにリンクが表示されます。拡張機能を正しく設定することで、このリンクは特定の図書館でその書籍を検索できます。学術雑誌記事の場合、そのリンクは記事へのリンクになります（利用者の所属組織にその記事へのアクセス権限がある場合のみ）。
- Zoteroなどの書誌情報管理ソフトウェアで書誌情報を保存できます[2]。このようなソフトウェアは記事から書誌情報をダウンロードして利用者のライブラリに保存でき、必要な時に取り出して利用できます。
現在、COinSは下記の箇所に追加されています。
- Wikipedia:書籍情報源
- 多くの出典テンプレート（Category:COinSを生成するテンプレートを参照）
- MediaWiki:Citethispage-content – 「このページを引用」のリンクを辿ったときに生成されます。ウィキペディアを引用するときに必要な情報が載っています。
テンプレート 編集
COinSを生成するテンプレートでは解説ページに{{UF-COinS}}を使用することで、そのテンプレートをCategory:COinSを生成するテンプレートに追加できます。

COinSメタデータの汚染 編集
出典テンプレートに正しくない引数を入力することで、メタデータが汚染されてしまう可能性があります。たとえば、著者全員の名前を|authors=引数に渡すと、下記のようになります。
