1961年発表の画期的なアルバム『ブルースの真実』(インパルス)でよく知られている。この作品は、モダン・ジャズ時代の最も影響力の大きいレコーディングのひとつとして位置づけられている。このアルバムの肝は、彼の作品の中でも決定版と言える「ストールン・モーメンツ」である。1960年代初期の重要作品として、この他にも『続・ブルースの真実』と『サウンド・ピーシズ』があり、いずれインパルスからリリースされた。[2]

初期 編集

オリヴァー・ネルソンは音楽一家に生まれた。兄はサクソフォーン奏者であり、1940年代にクーティ・ウィリアムスと共演している。姉はシンガー兼ピアノ奏者だった。6歳の時にピアノを習い始め、11歳の時にはサクソフォーンを演奏し始めた。1947年初頭にセントルイス周辺のローカル・バンドに参加し、1950年から翌年にかけてルイ・ジョーダン・バンドに在籍し、アルト・サクソフォーン奏者兼アレンジャーとして活躍した。[3][4]

1952年には兵役で海兵隊に入隊し、第3海兵師団音楽隊の木管楽器奏者として日本や朝鮮で演奏した。日本では東京フィルハーモニー交響楽団のコンサートを観に行く機会があり、モーリス・ラヴェルの『マ・メール・ロワ』やパウル・ヒンデミットの『交響曲変ホ調』を聴いた。ネルソンは後に「本当にモダンな音楽を聴いたのは、あの時が初めてだったんだよ。故郷のセントルイスじゃ、黒人がコンサートを観に行くことは許されなかったからね。全ての音楽がベートーベンやブラームスみたいに響かなくてもいいんだ、ということを認識したよ。僕が作曲家になろうと決めたのは、まさにあの時だったんだ。」と回想している。[5]

ネルソンはミズーリに戻り、セントルイス・ワシントン大学とリンカーン大学で作曲法と音楽理論を学んだ。1958年には修士号を取得した。当時師事した作曲家に、エリオット・カーター、ロバート・ワイクス、ジョージ・トレンブレーがいる。[3][6]

故郷のセントルイスに戻っている間に、アイリーン・ミッチェルと出会い、結婚した。ミッチェルとの間には息子のオリヴァー・ネルソン・ジュニアが誕生したが、間もなく二人は離婚した。大学院を卒業後、地元出身のオードリー・マキーウェンと結婚し、生涯を共にすることとなった。オードリーとの間には息子のナイルズが誕生した。

学位を取得した後、ニューヨークに転居し、アースキン・ホーキンズやワイルド・ビル・デイヴィスと共演し、ハーレムにあるアポロ・シアターのハウス・アレンジャーに就任した。短期間ではあるが西海岸でも活動し、1959年にはルーイー・ベルソン・ビッグ・バンドの一員として活動した。同年、コンボのリーダーとしてプレスティッジ・レコードでレコーディングするようになる。1960年から1961年にかけてカウント・ベイシー・ビッグ・バンドやデューク・エリントン・オーケストラにスポット参加した後、テナー・サクソフォーン奏者としてクインシー・ジョーンズ・ビッグ・バンドに加入し、全米とヨーロッパをツアーした。[3]

大躍進とその後 編集

プレスティッジ・レーベルには、1959年から1961年にかけて6枚のリーダー・アルバムを残した。それらの中で共演したのはケニー・ドーハム、ジョニー・ハモンド・スミス、エリック・ドルフィー、ロイ・ヘインズ、キング・カーティス、ジミー・フォレストらである。その後の『ブルースの真実』の発表によりネルソンは大躍進を遂げ、作曲家・アレンジャーとしての地位が定着する。そして、『アフロ・アメリカン・スケッチ』や『フル・ネルソン』を含む相当な数のビッグ・バンド・アルバムを録音し続けた。[3]

ネルソンはアレンジャーとして、数々のミュージシャンの大人数編成アンサンブル・アルバムを手掛けた。キャノンボール・アダレイ、ソニー・ロリンズ、エディー・ロックジョー・デイヴィス、ジョニー・ホッジス、ウェス・モンゴメリー、バディ・リッチ、ジミー・スミス、ビリー・テイラー、スタンリー・タレンタイン、アイリーン・レイド、ジーン・アモンズはその一例である。1966年から1975年にかけて、いくつかのライヴ・パフォーマンスでオールスター・ビッグ・バンドを率いた。また、同時期にはソリストとしても活動し、ソプラノ・サクソフォーンを中心に演奏した。

1967年にはロサンゼルスに移り、テレビや映画のBGMを手掛けるようになった。テレビ関連のプロジェクトを挙げると、『鬼警部アイアンサイド』、『四次元への招待』、『刑事コロンボ』、『600万ドルの男』や『復讐の鬼探偵ロングストリート』などがある。ネルソンが手掛けた映画音楽は、『ガンファイターの最後』(1969)、『Skullduggery』(1970)、『Zig Zag』(1970)などである。[4] 彼はまた、ソニー・ロリンズの『アルフィー (1966年の映画)』(1966)やガトー・バルビエリの『ラストタンゴ・イン・パリ』(1972)といった映画音楽の編曲を手掛けた。この時期に、ナンシー・ウィルソン、ジェームス・ブラウン、テンプテーションズ、ダイアナ・ロスといったポップ・スター達のアルバムのプロデュースやアレンジを手掛けた。

ビッグ・バンドでのライヴ出演(ベルリン、モントルー、ニューヨーク、ロサンゼルス)と並行して、少人数コンボで西アフリカ・ツアーを行った。あまり知られてはいないが、ネルソンはいくつかの交響曲を残している。また、ジャズ教育にも深く関与しており、母校のセントルイス・ワシントン大学に戻り、1969年夏には5週間のクリニックを行っている。そのクリニックにはフィル・ウッズ、メル・ルイス、サド・ジョーンズ、ローランド・ハナ、そしてロン・カーターがゲスト出演した。1966年にはエチュード集『Patterns for Improvisation』を出版し、現在でも高い評価を得ている。

最期 編集

1975年10月28日、心臓発作により死去。没年43。[4]
