シャレー・スクール

「シャレー・スクール」(Chalet School)シリーズは、エレノア・ブレント＝ダイアーが書いた小説。

概要 編集

寄宿学校を舞台にした物語で、この学校ははじめはオーストリアにあったのだが、ナチスが台頭してきたので、1939年にガーンジー島に引っ越す。その後、ウェールズ地方にあるとされるアーミフォードという架空の町にまた引っ越す。シリーズの最後までには、スイスに引っ越す。

シリーズの第1巻が出版されたのは1925年。

著者のブレント＝ダイアーは、「スクール・ストーリーズ」（学校を舞台にした小説カテゴリー）の「ビッグ・フォー」（4大著者）の一人とされている。

現在でも「シャレー・スクール」にはたくさんのファンがいて、たくさんのウェブサイトが開設されている。

登場人物 編集

主な登場人物は、マッジ・ベタニー（学校の創立者）、ジョーイ・ベタニー（マッジの妹）、ジェム・ラッセル（学校医で、マッジの夫でもある）、ジャック・メイナード（学校医で、後にジョーイの夫となる）など。

シリーズの最初ではジョーイはまだ子供だが、その成長後は、「第二世代」ともいうべきキャラクターたちが登場する。特にシリーズの最後あたりでは、ジョーイの三つ子の娘たち（レン、コン、マーゴット）が物語の中心となる。
