略歴 編集

カーターとラルフは、ディケンソン郡 (バージニア州)のクリンチ山脈近くの小さな牧場に生まれる。幼少期から、音楽が生活の一部で、ビル・モンロー、J.E.メイナー＆マウンテナーズ、グランド・オール・オプリの地方放送などの音楽に触れていた。最初、"the Lazy Ramnlers"というバンド名でテネシー州ジョンソンシティのWJHLで演奏を行っていた。[1] 第二次世界大戦によって、彼らの活動は中断されるが、彼らが軍役から帰還するまでの間に、彼らが音楽に足跡をつける事は出来ていなかった。

1946年、スタンレー・ブラザーズ＆クリンチ・マウンテン・ボーイズを結成。当初はビル・モンローのコピーバンドであった。[2] カーターはギターの演奏とリード・ボーカルを担当し、ラルフはバンジョーの演奏と高いテノールボイスでの力強い歌唱を行った。初期はフラットマンドリンにピー・ウィー・ランバートが、フィドルにボビー・サマーが所属していた。サマーはすぐに脱退し、代わりにレスリー・キースが加入した。[3] 1946年12月26日、バンドはブリストル (テネシー州)のラジオ局WCYBの人気番組"Farm and Fun Time"での演奏を始める。[4] 1947年9月には、1年前にできたばかりのレコーディング会社Rich-R-Recordsからレコーディング・デビューを果たす。[5] 1948年にアール・スクラッグスによってスリーフィンガー・ピッキングが主流となるが、当時から現在に至るまで、スタンレーはレコーディングとコンサートで二本の指しか使わずにバンジョーを弾いている。[6] 1949年5月、スタンレー・ブラザーズはコロムビア・レコードでのレコーディングを始める。[7]

当時、ビル・モンローはスタンレー・ブラザーズやフラット＆スクラッグスのようなバンドを嫌っていた。モンローは彼らが、自分の音楽をコピーして「盗んで」いると考え、商業的に自分を追い込むことになるだろうと思っていたからである。[8][9]1950年代初頭、スタンレー・ブラザーズはいったん活動を休止し、デトロイトのフォードの工場で働きだした。最終的には、モンローとスタンレー・ブラザーズは友好関係を結び、カーターは1951年の夏に数か月の間モンローと演奏を行った。1951年8月、ラルフはバイクの大事故にあい、活動を休止。[10] 彼の回復にしたがって、カーターとラルフは再びクリンチ・マウンテン・ボーイズを結成。

1950年代の終わり、次第にブルーグラスの人気はかげってきたのに従って、スタンレー・ブラザーズはフロリダ州ライブ・オークに移り住み、1958年から1962年まで毎週WNERのラジオ番組"Suwannee River Jamboree"で演奏を行う。[11] 1966年には、ヨーロッパツアーを行い、帰国後は1966年にカーターが他界するまで、ともに活動を行っていた。[12]

ブラザーズは多くのオリジナル曲を作曲した。カーターはシンプルな歌詞に見かけによらない強い感情をのせる巧みな作曲法を持っていた。スタンレーのスタイルは、伝統的な"マウンテン・ソウル"サウンドを説明するのにピッタシである。彼らのサウンドは、彼らが両親や故郷の南西バージニアの隣人たちから学んだ、Primitive Baptistに近いボーカル・スタイルを持っている。「オールドライム、マウンテン・スタイル、いわゆるブルーグラスって音楽、そういうのがスタンレーのサウンドとブルーグラスの主流のサウンドを区別させてるんだ」。彼らはのちに、ジョージ・シャフラーのクロスピッキングを用いたギターソロを用いて、トラディショナルなサウンドに新しい装飾を施した。
