解説Avro Lancaster I ‘R5868 - PO-S’ (32477618853).jpg
Built 1942 and delivered to 83sqn at RAF Scampton, later RAF Wyton. Flew 68 missions with the unit before transferring to 467sqn at RAF Bottesford. With this unit she flew another 71 missions, making her total 139 active missions. She was then involved in ‘Operation Exodus’, the repatriation of PoWs, until the end of May 1945. By August she had been allocated to the Air Historical Branch and saved for display, due to her extraordinary tally of missions. Originally stored at Wroughton, she moved back to her original home at Scampton in 1959 and by 1960 she was on display at the main gate, repainted in original 83sqn markings as the unit was also based back at Scampton at that time. In 1970 she was removed from display and restored at RAF Bicester, returning to her 467sqn markings. In 1972 she moved to Hendon for permanent display and was in the main halls at the museums opening. In 1982 she travelled the short distance to the Bomber Command Hall where she remains on display.
