レオ・シュトラウス

レオ・シュトラウス（Leo Strauss、1899年9月20日 - 1973年10月18日）は、ドイツ出身で主にアメリカで活躍した哲学者である。主著とされることもある『自然権と歴史』や『政治哲学とは何か』によって、政治哲学者として有名。

来歴

マールブルク近郊で生まれる。エルンスト・カッシーラーに師事し、1922年にPh. Dを取得。後にエトムント・フッサール及びマルティン・ハイデッガーに学ぶ。1932年から1934年までの間にロックフェラー奨学生としてパリとケンブリッジに留学。本人もユダヤ系でシオニストでもあったため、ナチスの迫害を逃れるため、1938年にアメリカへ移住。コロンビア大学歴史学科のリサーチ・フェローを経てニュースクール大学において政治学を講義する。1944年にアメリカ国籍を取得。1949年にシカゴ大学に招聘され、以後20年間にわたり、政治哲学の講義・研究を行った。

ハイデッガー、タルムード（ユダヤ教の正典）、イスラム哲学、スピノザなどの哲学を取り入れ、独自の哲学体系を構築。彼の門下生によって「シュトラウス学派」が形成された。その講義では、プラトンをはじめとして、マキャベリ、ニーチェらのテクストが用いられた。アリストテレスの影響からカール・ポパーと同じくプラトンの国家論には断固反対したが、プラトンは認識論として読むべきとし、大衆を統一するには外部の脅威を用意したり、宗教を用いてもよいという「高貴な嘘」Noble liesをプラトンは唱えたと解釈した。ただし、彼個人は、マルクス主義やナチズムを「残酷なニヒリズム」として斥け、その台頭を許したワイマール政権も批判した。

また、マックス・ヴェーバー流の「事実と価値の峻別」を問題視した。

政治的影響への見方

彼の思想は現代アメリカ政治、特にネオコンと呼ばれている人に影響を与え、ブッシュ政権の運営の拠り所のひとつと見る向きもある。しかし、フランシス・フクヤマのようにそういった見方を否定する論調もある。フクヤマは著書の中で「ブッシュ政権の外交政策にシュトラウスが影響を与えたと見ることがバカげている理由の一つに、イラク戦争へと邁進したブッシュ政権内にシュトラウス派がただの一人もいないという事実がある。」と述べている（『アメリカの終わり』35頁）。ただし、シュトラウスに影響を受けた人物（フクヤマもその一人）と、シュトラウス派（Straussian）は区別されることも多い。

あるいは、そもそも古典的な自然法を奉じるシュトラウスと人為的な世界観を持つネオコンでは矛盾しているとの指摘もある。

弟子格に当たる人物としては、アラン・ブルームやソール・ベローがいる。
