「和」はそれ自体文化的概念となっている日本語である。
Wa (和) is a Japanese term which has become a cultural concept of its own.
「和」は、中国から伝わったとき、もともと「調和」、「平和」、「均衡」を意味していた。
日本の哲学・文化においてはいくつもの微妙に異なる意味を持つ指導的概念であった。現在でも、日本的価値としてもっとも重要だと考えられている。<!--fix me!-->
Imported from Chinese, "Wa" originally meant harmony, peace, balance. It was a guiding concept in Japanese philosophy and culture with dozens of subtle different associated meanings. It is considered as the most important Japanese value.
「和」は同時に日本そのものや日本的なるもの（例えば日本式食事を意味する「和食」など）をもあらわす。この意味で、20世紀の歴史を通して「和」は高度に感情的および/あるいは政治的概念であり続けている。
It also refers to Japan itself or something Japanese (such as "washoku" (和食) which means a Japanese-style meal). In this sense it has, through the history of the 20th century, been a highly emotional and/or political concept.
