1874年、ヘッケルが発生学のテキストAnthropogenieを発刊して、しばらくすると、掲載された図解に、ヘッケルが意図的に改ざんを行ったとのではないかという訴えがWilhelm Hisらによって出される。ヘッケルは改ざんの事実を否定する。
近年の研究によって、図解の改ざんがあったという批判は正しい当なものであるが、一部の批判は純粋な科学的な問題ではなく、当時、進化論を認めなかった勢力による政治的攻撃という偏向したものであったと言われている。<ref>Michael K. Richardson. 1998. "Haeckel's embryos continued."
