アスワンは、スウェネト(Swenet)と呼ばれるた古代都市であった。古代エジプトの言語でスウェネトとは「交易」の意味である。古代エジプトにおいて南の辺境の町であった。スウェネトという言葉は、エジプトの神に由来すると考えられている。この神は、エジプトが[[古代ギリシア|ギリシア]]や[[古代ローマ|ローマ]]に占領された後、ギリシアには[[エイレイテュイア]](Eileithyia)、ローマにはルキナ(Lucina)として伝わった。エイレイテュイア、ルキナは共に「出産（多産）の女神」を表している。
