当時[[アメリカ合衆国|アメリカ]]国内の[[市場]]を席巻していた、[[読本]]や綴字教本の作者であるノア・ウェブスターは、辞典編纂に当たり数10年にわたる調査を実施。[[1806年]]に初の辞典『簡明英語辞典』を上梓する事となるが、{{仮リンク|綴字改定|en|English-language spelling reform|label=アメリカ式綴り}}（centreをcenterに、honourをhonorに、programmeをprogramとするなど）の他、[[文学]]に限らず[[芸術]]並びに[[科学]]関係の[[術語]]も収録するなど、その後の辞典の原形となる特徴を有していた。
