メタノバクテリウム属 (Methanobacterium属)とはメタノバクテリウム科 (Methanobacteriaceae) の属の一つである[1] 。名前とは裏腹に真性細菌ではなく古細菌である。細胞膜を持たずペプチドグリカンを有する[2] 。Methanobacterium属は非運動性で嫌気性である。この属のいくつかの種はギ酸を利用してメタンを還元し、それ以外は水素分子で二酸化炭素を還元して生きる。高温で低酸素の環境で一般に生息しており、例えば嫌気的な動物の消化液中やその廃出液、熱水泉などに分布する[3]。
