『史記』「五帝本紀』によれば、嚳高辛の父は[[蟜極|{{lang|zh|蟜}}極]]である。{{lang|zh|蟜}}極の父は、[[黄帝]]の子である玄囂（[[少昊]]）なので、{{lang|zh|嚳}}は、黄帝の曾孫となる。また、嚳高辛が生まれながらにして自分の名を言うことができ、聡明であったと記す。また嚳の徳の高さと世がよく治まった様子を様々な言葉で称える。娵訾氏の娘をめとって子に[[摯]]をもうけ、陳鋒氏の娘をめとって放勲（[[堯]]）をもうけた。彼らは嚳の死後に順に立って帝になった<ref>『史記』「五帝本紀第一」、新釈漢文大系『史記』一の35-37頁。</ref>。
