ジョイス・キャロル・オーツ（Joyce Carol Oates, 1938年6月16日 - ）は、アメリカ合衆国の作家、プリンストン大学教授 (Roger S. Berlind '52 Professor in the Humanities)。夫のレイモンド・スミスと共に文芸誌「オンタリオ・レビュー」を編集・発行している。

経歴

ニューヨーク州ロックポートにアイルランド系の家庭に生まれ、少女時代は母と同じワンルーム・スクールに通いながらニューヨーク郊外で過ごした。14歳のときに祖母からタイプライターをもらったことをきっかけに小説を書きはじめる。学校ではとびぬけた成績を示し、奨学金を得てシラキューズ大学に入学。19 歳のときにマドモアゼル誌主催の学生短編小説コンテストで入賞。1960年に卒業生総代としてシラキューズ大学を卒業、1961年にウィスコンシン大学から文学修士号を得る。

デトロイト大学(en:University of Detroit Mercy)で教員をしながら、1966年に最初の長編小説 With Shuddering Fall を発表。1970年に『かれら』them で全米図書賞を受賞。1978年にプリンストン大学に移る。

2001年1月にはオプラ・ウィンフリーのトークショーで We Were the Mulvaneys が推薦図書として取り上げられてベストセラーとなり、翌年にはブライス・ダナー主演でドラマ化された。

1996年に『生ける屍』Zombie でブラム・ストーカー賞を受賞。2005年にThe Falls でフェミナ賞を受賞。2011年に「化石の兄弟」"Fossil-Figures"で世界幻想文学大賞を受賞。2019年にエルサレム賞受賞。

長編『ブラックウォーター』Black Water (1992)、What I Lived For (1994)、『ブロンド』Blonde (2000)、また作品集『愛の車輪』The Wheel of Love and Other Stories (1970)、Lovely, Dark, Deep: Stories (2014) で5度ピューリッツァー賞にノミネートされた。

人物

ほとんど本の無い環境で育った少女時代に『不思議の国のアリス』に出会い、深く影響されたことをしばしば語っている。また、オーツ自身によって、影響を受けた作家としてシルヴィア・プラス、ボブ・ディラン、 ウィリアム・フォークナー、ヘンリー・デイヴィッド・ソロー、ヘンリー・ジェイムズらの名が挙げられている。ボブ・ディランに対しては1966年の短編作品「あなたはどこへ行くのどこから来たの」"Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?"を奉げている。
