ベルナール・ユーヴェルマンス

ベルナール・ユーヴェルマンス（英:Bernard Heuvelmans、1916年10月10日– 2001年8月22日）はフランスの未確認動物学者、動物学者。未確認動物学の父とも称される。国際未知動物学会初代会長。

経歴と人物 編集

1916年10月10日にフランスのルアーブルに生まれた。幼少期にジュール・ベルヌの『海底二万里』や同じく小説家のコナン・ドイルによる『ロスト・ワールド』を読み未確認動物への興味を募らせる。また、子供の頃から動物に興味を持っており、ベルギーのブリュッセル自由大学 （その後ブリュッセル自由大学 (フランス語)とブリュッセル自由大学 (オランダ語)とに分離する）に進学、アフリカ・アリクイの歯についての論文で動物学の学位を取得した[2]。初期二足歩行理論の提唱者であるSerge Frechkopの弟子で 1939年、彼の博士論文は、 ツチブタの歯に関するものであった。

第二次世界大戦中、彼はナチスの収容所を脱出し、その後パリでジャズ歌手として働いていた [3]。1948年のサタデーイブニングポストに掲載されたアイヴァン・サンダーソンによる｢恐竜は現代にも生き残っている｣を読んだことにより未確認動物研究を開始した。1955年には世界各地の未確認動物についてまとめた本『未知の動物を求めて』を出版。著書は動物学研究者による本格的な研究書として学会でも評価を受けた。ただし後年の研究によりユーベルマンスには資料を疑う癖がなかったり、事象を大袈裟に表現する傾向があったことが指摘されている。
