来歴 編集

英連邦王国セイロンのコロンボに生まれ、11歳で母親と共にイギリスに移住。その後カナダに移り、トロント大学とクイーンズ大学で学んだ。カナダの市民権を得ている。1971年から1983年までトロントのヨーク大学で教鞭をとった。

『イギリス人の患者』で1992年の英国ブッカー賞を受賞。この作品はアンソニー・ミンゲラ監督によって映画化（『イングリッシュ・ペイシェント』）され、第69回アカデミー賞で作品賞・監督賞など9部門を受賞した。

1990年、2000年、2007年の三度、カナダ総督文学賞英語フィクション部門賞(en)を受賞している。
