Old 97の事故（オールド97のじこ）は、かつて運行していたサザン鉄道の列車Old 97による鉄道事故である。

Old 97の公式な呼称はファスト・メールであり、郵便車でもあった。同列車は1902年12月（ケーシー・ジョーンズの死から2年後）に運行を始めた。列車はワシントンD.C.発ジョージア州アトランタ行きであった。1903年9月27日、バージニア州モンローからノースカロライナ州スペンサーへ向かう途中にバージニア州ダンビル付近のスティルハウス・トレッスル橋で脱線事故を起こした。

この事故は、それを歌ったバラードでも知られる。事故はバラーダーのインスピレーション源となり、最も有名なのはバージニア州の音楽家のG・B・グレイソンとヘンリー・ホワイターにより初めて商業的にレコードされたバラードである[1]。ヴァーノン・ダルハート版は1924年にリリースされ (Victor Record no. 19427)、時々アメリカのレコード業界で初めてミリオンセラーとなったカントリーミュージックのリリースとして挙げられる[2]。それ以来、"Wreck of the Old 97"は数々の音楽家によりレコードされている。その曲はリンチバーグ周辺の鉄道員や船乗り、モンタナ州に暮らす感傷的なカウボーイの間で大人気となった。
"Wreck of the Old 97"はRoud Folk Song Indexの777番目に収録されている。
このバラードでは事故の責任は鉄道会社がスティーブ・ブローディー (Steve Broady) に圧力をかけたこと（これにより制限速度を超過した）にあると明言している。歌詞（ダルハート版）は以下のように始まっている。"Well, they handed him his orders in Monroe, Virginia, saying, 'Steve, you're way behind time; this is not 38 it is Old 97, you must put her into Spencer on time.'"

1865年の歌The Ship that Never Returned（en:The Ship that Never Returned）の詩とメロディの類似性などもあり、このバラードは複雑な著作権訴訟の焦点となった。
また、The Ship that Never Returnedやこのバラードは、カントリー・ミュージックに影響を与えた[3]。Charlie on the MTA（en:M.T.A. (song)）などがある。
