VSS Unity（ヴァージン宇宙船”Unity"、機体記号：N202VG）は、以前VSS Voyagerと呼ばれいたスペースシップツークラスの弾道ロケット搭載の有人スペースプレーンである。2番目に製造されたスペースシップツーであり、ヴァージン・ギャラクティック船団の一部として使用される。

2016年2月19日に、宇宙船は公開され[2] [3] 、2016年9月8日に初飛行する前に、2016年9月に地上ベースのシステム統合テストを完了した [4] [5]。2018年12月13日、宇宙船は50マイル (80 km)以上の高度に達した [6]。

概要 編集

VSS Unityは、ヴァージン・ギャラクティックによるスペースシップツー弾道スペースプレーンの2号機である[7]。またスペースシップ・カンパニーによって製造された最初のスペースシップツーでもある。

2016年2月19日に、宇宙船の名前が発表された[8]。命名発表前は、スペースシップツー、シリアルナンバー2と呼ばれていた[9] [10]。

2004年には､シリアルナンバー2にVSS Voyagerと命名されるという憶測があったが[11]、これはメディア報道で繰り返し使用された非公式の名称であった[12] [13] [14]。

Unityという名前は、英国の物理学者スティーヴン・ホーキングによって選ばれた。ホーキングの目は、Unityの側面にある目のロゴのモデルとしても使用されている[15]。

2012年、Unityの製造は開始され､[16]2014年9月にN202VGの宇宙船登録が提出された[17]。2014年11月初旬の時点で、Unityのビルドは構造的に約90％完了し、全体で65％完了した。

2015年4月の時点で、Unityの初期地上試験は、2015年後半に開始できると予測されていた[18] [19] [20]。

2015年5月21日、Unityは機体の重量を自輪で支えるというマイルストーンに到達した[21]。2016年2月19日に宇宙船は発表され[22]､これはヴァージン・ギャラクティックの創設者であるリチャード・ブランソンが2015年11月に予測したとおりであった。その後、地上および飛行試験が開始された[23] [24]。

VSS Unityは、2番目に完成したスペースシップツーであり､最初に完成したVSS Enterpriseは、2014年10月下旬のクラッシュで破壊されている[25] [26]。

2016年2月にVSS Unityで「システム統合テスト（英語版）」と呼ばれる段階試験が開始された[27]。
