王と神

王と神(H₃rḗḱs dei̯u̯ós-kwe)とは、再建されたインド・ヨーロッパ祖語によって記述された短い対話文。大まかにアイタレヤ・ブラーフマナの「ハリシュチャンドラ王」という話に基づいている。S. K. センが印欧語学の多くの研究者（Y. E. Arbeitman、en:Eric P. Hamp、en:Manfred Mayrhofer、en:Jaan Puhvel、Werner Winter等）に依頼したことにより作成された。

EIECに掲載されたもの。ハンプ版とセン版は、ハンプは神をケルト神話のルグス(Lughus)としたのに対し、センは古代インド神話のヴァルナにしている。

"Let this be so," said the bright god Werunos. The king's lady bore a son.

ある時一人の王がいた。王には子供がいなかった。王は子供が欲しかった。そのため祭司に「子が私に生まれるようにせよ」と依頼した。祭司は王に「ウェルノス神にお祈り下さい」と言った。そして王は今祈るためにウェルノス神に近づいた。「父なる神よ、私の声を聞け！」するとウェルノスは天国から降りてきた。「お前は何を望む？」「私は子を欲する」「ではそのようになれ」輝くウェルノス神はそう言った。そして王妃は子を産んだ。
