サイクロバクター属Psychrobacter)はシュードモナス目モラクセラ科の一つであり、グラム陰性、高浸透圧耐性、オキシダーゼ陽性、高齢性であり性、好気性真正細菌である[17][18][19][20]。形状は、典型的には球菌または球桿菌[21]。この属の菌種のいくつかは人間から分離され、心内膜炎腹膜炎などの人間に対する感染症を引き起こす可能性が知られている[22]。この細菌は好冷性であり、-10〜42 °Cの温度で増殖できる[23]。この属の細菌が最初に発見されたのは1986年のことであり[1]、その種はPsychrobacter immobilisであったが、2002年になりDNA-rRNAハイブリダイゼーション分析によりサイクロバクター属がモラクセラ科に属することが決定された[24]。サイクロバクター属細菌は、高湿度、低温の高塩分濃度の環境[23][25] 、並びに、温暖で低塩分濃度の環境と広範囲で生育する[20][26]

Psychrobacter cryohalolentisおよびPsychrobacter arcticusから単離された低アシル化リポ多糖(LPS: Hypoacylated lipopolysaccharide)は、マクロファージにおいて中程度のTLR4媒介性炎症反応を誘発し、これにより、これら最近の感染症患者は局所および全身の細菌排除機構の不全をもたらす可能性がある[27]
