- Robert Ellwood, writing in Mythlore, called Terashima's version beautiful, the illustrations marvellous, the characters treated "with the seriousness to which the epic dimensions of Tolkien's work entitles them." In his view, "Hobbit, dwarf, and wizard, Bilbo and Gollum, emerge in these sensitive line drawings as real, discrete personalities".
