English: Admiral Sir Charles Saunders, c. 1713-1775 A three-quarter-length portrait to left facing to right, with the sitter wearing flag-officer's full-dress uniform, 1767-83. With a dark tie-wig, he also wears the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath, a dark navy jacket and white waistcoat embroidered with gold. His gloved right hand holds his sword hilt. His left hand gestures to the background on the left, indicating the night attack by French fire-rafts on his fleet at Quebec in 1759. Sir Charles Saunders, Admiral of the Blue, commanded the naval force that co-operated with Wolfe in the capture of Quebec in 1759. We know from a contemporary letter, dated 1772 from Lord Hood to Lady Chatham, that Saunders sat at least three times for this portrait. This picture is one of a group left to Greenwich Hospital by Admiral Sir Hugh Palliser, Governor of Greenwich Hospital, in 1796. The group as a whole comprises BHC2516 (Admiral Lord Anson by Reynolds), BHC3011 ( this one), BHC0392 and BHC0394 (both of French fire-raft counter-attacks at the taking of Quebec, 1759, by Serres): see notes to BHC2792 (Sir Edward Hughes, by Reynolds). |
