is given in Arnauds book on the province ofChampagne, and is reputed to have belonged to Henrythe Generous, who lived from 1152 to 1181. Upon opening the tomb of Pierre Mauclerc, Duke ofBrittany (1212—1250), in the abbey of St. Yved deBraine, a very remarkable pouch was discovered, whichhas been drawn by Gaigneres, and published by Mont-faucon. The groundwork of gold tissue is ornamentedwith trellis or lozenge shapes, within which are twenty-nine different blazons, that of Brittany occupying thecentre. Is it possible that these give us, as it were,a list of the knights who accompanied the Duke ofBrittany on his crusade to Palestine ? In the Delaherche collection are two notable alms-bags or pouches for ladies, ornamented in a mostcharacteristic manner with embroideries of the thirteenthcentury. The embroideryupon the alms-bag under notice is done with silk andCyprus gold thread, and must have been highly remark-able in its pristine state; the ground of green velvet,backed with linen, is unfortunately much worn. Theopposite side is of green flowered Lucca damask,patterned with birds. In former times this pouch be-longed to the Chatelaines of the Duchy of Bar. Such pouches were always trimmed either with littleknobs and tassels made of thread or metal; some werehung with small bells, mentioned by the chronicler as Ung bourselot cloquete dargent (a pouch with silverbells).
