Oura Cathedral was built for foreign settlers in Nagasaki and is the oldest existing church in Japan. Its gothic design is representative of European architecture. The church was built to honor and commemorate the 26 Martyrs who were persecuted in Nishizaka Hill. As such, the church façade is turned towards the direction of Nishizaka Hill.
