この文章も彼がいかに日常に起きることに関心を持ち、そこから理論への着想を得ていたかという彼の賢さを表現するために作られた話とも言われており{{誰2|date=2011年11月}}、真偽は定かではない。また、ニュートンが死去した年に、[[ヴォルテール]]は彼の[[随筆|エッセイ]]''Essay on Epic Poetry''（1727）の中で彼がニュートンの姪に聞いた話として「アイザック・ニュートンは庭仕事をしている際に、リンゴの木からリンゴが落ちるのを見て、彼の重力に関する最初の発想を得た」とする逸話を紹介している。
