ドイツサッカー界も、西ドイツのサッカーリーグであるブンデスリーガと[[ドイツ民主共和国|東ドイツ]]の1部リーグである[[DDRオーバーリーガ]]との組織的な統一を図るのではなく、ブンデスリーガがDDRオーバーリーガ所属チームを取り込む形での統合が志向されることとなり、東ドイツサッカー協会は解散し、北東ドイツサッカー協会Nordostdeutsche Fußballverband）へと再編された。翌1990-1991シーズンは、DDRオーバーリーガの名称がNOFVオーバーリーガ(北東ドイツサッカー協会オーバーリーガの意)と改められることになり、近い将来のブンデスリーガの旧東ドイツ地域の編入への流れが決定的となったシーズンであった。(※実際のDDRオーバーリーガ勢編入は1991-1992シーズンからである。)</br>
なお、シーズン終了後の1990年[[6月8日]]から[[7月8日]]にかけて実施された[[1990 FIFAワールドカップ]]では、[[サッカードイツ代表|西ドイツ]]代表が、ドイツ代表として3度目の優勝を果たしている。</br>
