1863年に[[スペイン]]の[[マドリード]]で生まれ、1872年にアメリカに移住して[[ボストン・ラテン・スクール]]と[[ハーバード大学]]で哲学者[[ウィリアム・ジェームズ]]などから教育を受けた。1907年からハーバード大学で哲学の教授に就任し、1912年からフランスやイタリアへ移っている。[[ゲオルク・ヴィルヘルム・フリードリヒ・ヘーゲル|ヘーゲル]]的[[観念論]]の立場から[[哲学]]、美学の研究者として著作や論文を発表している。晩年は[[イタリア]]で過ごし、1952年9月26日に[[ローマ]]で没。
