**1920年10月26日、[[湖南省]][[長沙]]で通訳した際、趙の湖南方言があまりに流暢なので、「湖南の何県出身ですか？」と質問された（その質問をしたのは若い頃の[[毛沢東]]だとの説もある。但し、趙自身の“My Linguistic Autobiography”Autobiography”（Aspects of Chinese Sociolinguistics 所収）には、本編中唯一具体的な日付を挙げながら、毛沢東の名前は出てこない）。
*1921年（29歳）：楊歩偉と結婚
**楊は外科医。東京女子医学専門学校（現・[[東京女子医科大学]]）を卒業後、中国初の近代女医として北京で開業していた。
**二人は一日ごとに話す方言を変えていた。
**その時期、[[ベルンハルド・カールグレン]]の“Etudes“Études sur la phonologie chinoise”（『中国音韻学研究』）を読み、中国語の史的研究に興味を持ち始める。また、言語学を専念する事をきめたのも、この時期である。
