バリアは[[ホーチミン]]の南東90km、[[ブンタウ]]の北西20kmに位置する。面積は197.5 km²で、人口は2011年時点で約12.2万人、人口密度は3500人/km²だった。

The city was promoted from the town of Bà Rịa on 22 August 2012.<ref>http://news.gov.vn/Home/Ba-Ria-city-established/20128/15440.vgp</ref> The town was founded on 2 June 1994 from the split of district of Châu Thành into districts of Châu Đức, Tân Thành, and Bà Rịa town.
Many provincial agencies have been relocated from Vũng Tàu to Bà Rịa. Bà Rịa is the ''[[de facto]]'' provincial seat but officially Vũng Tàu is still the ''[[de jure]]'' province's capital.
