== 略歴 ==
[[1934年]][[ミシガン州]][[デトロイト]]生まれ。{{日本語版にない記事リンク|ロス・リー・フィニー|en|Ross Lee Finney|links=no|short=on}}に師事したが、後にクラスメートの[[ロバート・アシュリー]]や{{日本語版にない記事リンク|ゴードン・ムンマ|en|Gordon Mumma|links=no|short=on}}とともに[[:en:ONCE Group|ONCE]]を設立。活発な前衛性を展開しており、「アイスクリームの王様」ではさまざまな音具の活用で話題を取る。レイノルズは前衛畑にいながら、どの学風も排除しない逸材であったため、[[1989年]]の[[ピューリッツァー賞 音楽部門|ピュリッツァー賞]]受賞は{{日本語版にない記事リンク|カイル・ガン|en|Kyle Gann|links=no|short=on}}をして「最も賞から遠い派閥の人が成功した」と称えられた。
日本に住んだこともあり、[[サントリー芸術財団|サントリー音楽財団]]の招きで一度だけ日本から委嘱をもらった。[[高橋悠治]]とは交流も深く、[[:en:Mode Records|Mode Records]]からリリースされているピアノ作品集のいくつかの楽曲は彼が弾いた。[[カリフォルニア大学サンディエゴ校]]で[[湯浅譲二]]や[[ブライアン・ファーニホウ]]などと長く教鞭をとり、最も完璧に近い成果を出した教え子には[[ハヤ・チェルノヴィン]]をあげることが出来る。ほかの教え子達は全てアメリカ音楽教職業界の頂点に位置している。現在も創作活動は続けている。
