ラムは[[カリフォルニア州]][[ロサンゼルス]]で生まれた。1930年に大学に入学し、1934年に[[カリフォルニア大学バークレー校]]で化学の学士号を、1938年に物理学の博士号を取得した。1956年から1962年にかけては[[オックスフォード大学]]で教授を務め、[[イェール大学]]、[[コロンビア大学]]、[[スタンフォード大学]]でも教えていた。
