[[レイキャヴィーク]]からは700キロメートル近く離れているため、[[エイイルススタジル空港]]までの空路を利用するのが一般的である。19世紀後半に、大きな農場が建設されたのがこの町のはじまりだが、[[アイスランド]]と[[ノルウェー]]、[[デンマーク]]との交易拠点である[[セイジスフィヨルズル|セイジスフィヨルズゥル]]に近いため、急速に都市化した。[[東アイスランド]]の観光拠点である。
==気候==
ケッペンの気候区分によると、[[西岸海洋性気候]]に区分される。内陸に位置するため海沿いの街と比較して冬の寒さが厳しい。秋から冬にかけて降水量が多く、積雪量も多い。夏はアイスランド国内では気温が上がりやすい街であり、晴れた日には20℃前後まで上がる。
