1970年代末頃、ペニー・レインには「ペニー・レイン・レコーズ」やワインバー「ハーパーズ・ビザール」（現ペニー・レイン・ワインバー）があった。後者はかつて診療所だったが、開業場所は1980年代にスミスダウン・プレイスへ移った。英国におけるバス事業の民営化を受けて、ビオレティス理髪店の先の坂を少し上がったところにあったマージーサイド乗客輸送機関のバスターミナルは取り壊され、跡地はスーパーマーケットやパブが完備したショッピングセンターになっている。バス待合所は1980年代に個人に買い取られ、「サージェント・ペパーズ・ビストロ」に改装された。

The street has long been sought out by Beatles fans touring Liverpool. In the past, street signs saying "Penny Lane" were constant targets of tourist theft and had to be continually replaced. City officials gave up and simply began painting the street name on the sides of buildings. This practice was stopped in 2007 and more theft-resistant "Penny Lane" street signs have since been installed, although some are still stolen.[3] The Penny Lane area has acquired a level of trendiness and desirability.[citation needed] The "alternative" businesses (wholefood outlets, charity shops), the now expanded array of cafés, bars, bistros and takeaway food emporiums, as well as traditional businesses (WHSmith and Clarke's cake shop), make the neighbourhood the most sought-after among Liverpool's large student population.[citation needed]
