略歴 編集
サウサンプトンに生まれる。中学卒業後、地元新聞社のメッセンジャーボーイから週刊紙の新聞記者となる。中央紙のデイリー・エクスプレス紙、デイリー・スケッチ紙を経て、デイリー・メイル紙に勤務。外報部長を務める1973年に処女作『GOODBYE TO AN OLDFRIEND』でデビュー。1975年に退職し、ジャーナリストとして活動。特派員として30カ国以上に滞在。23歳に脳内出血で倒れ、1988年にも再発するが、手術で一命を取り留めた。
ソビエト連邦には、政府当局から入国許可が下りず、ロシアとなり体制が変わるまで入国できなかった。
エスピオナージやサスペンスなどの著作が多いが、取材によるノンフィクションなども多数執筆している。作品によっては、Jonathan Evans、Jack Winchester、Harry Asher、John Maxwellなどの名義で発表しているが、日本ではいずれもフリーマントルで紹介されている。
グレアム・グリーンから強い影響を受け、グリーンの小説哲学「性格描写こそが構想である」が座右の銘であるという（南川三治郎『推理作家の発想工房』）。その言葉通り、個性的な主人公のシリーズで人気を博している。主なものに、冴えない風貌でいながら頭脳明晰なスパイであるチャーリー・マフィンシリーズや、欧州版FBIであるユーロポール(欧州刑事警察機構)の心理分析官クローディーン・カーターシリーズ、米露の捜査官がタッグを組むカウリーとダニーロフシリーズなどがある。
