この属には好気性、グラム陽性、非抗酸性、非運動性、化学有機栄養性の種が含まれており、表面が装飾された胞子の鎖に分化する、よく発達し且つ非断片化された栄養菌糸と気菌糸を産生する。この鎖には多様な長さと形状があり、直線、曲線、或いはとぐろ状などがある[63]。この属は現在、命名法に基づき有効に認められた70以上の種で構成されている[64]が、一部の種は分類学上の地位が不確実であり、更なる比較研究が必要とされている[63]

この属のメンバーは、アセチル型のペプチドグリカン構造を有する III/B型細胞壁(meso-ジアミノピメリン酸とマデュロースが存在する)によって化学分類学的に特徴付けられていない。主要なメナキノンはMK-9(H4)、MK-9(H6)、及びMK-9(H8)である。主要なリン脂質はジホスファチジルグリセロールとホスファチジルイノシトール(PI)であり、脂肪酸のパターンは3a型(分岐した飽和及び不飽和脂肪酸とツベルクロステアリン酸)である[65]
