アーサー・ヒル・ハッサル

アーサー・ヒル・ハッサル（Arthur Hill Hassall、1817年12月13日 - 1894年4月9日）はイギリスの医師、薬剤師、顕微鏡学者である。公衆衛生や食物の安全性に関する著書で知られる。

略歴

外科医の家5人兄弟の末子としてミドルセックスのTeddingtonで生まれた。リッチモンドで学んだ後、ダブリンで叔父のジェームズ・マレーのもとで1834年から見習い医師となり、植物学や海要請物を研究した。1846年に 『健康と病気の人体の顕微鏡的解剖学』（"The Microscopic Anatomy of the Human Body in Health and Disease"）2巻を出版した。

キューガーデンで植物学を学んだ後、植物学、特に淡水藻に関する記事を執筆した。1850年の著書『ロンドン住民に供給される上水の顕微鏡的試験』（"A microscopical examination of the water supplied to the inhabitants of London and the suburban districts"）は、人々の注目を集め、水の衛生の改革に契機となった。1850年代に食品への混入物を研究し、彼の報告が医学雑誌、「ランセット」に改革家のトーマス・ウェイクリー（Thomas Wakley）によって掲載されると、1860年に粗悪食品防止法（Food Adulteration Act）が施行され、その後の規制につながった。

ロイヤル・フリー・ホスピタルの医師としても働いたが、健康を害し、1869年にワイト島に移住した。ワイト島に療養所（後のRoyal National Hospital for Diseases of the Chest）を設立した。

1878年以降、温暖な気候を求めて、主にヨーロッパに暮らした。サンレモで家族と暮らし、夏はルツェルンで働いた。この間、結核の転地療養についての著作を行った。著書に"an Remo and the Western Riviera Climatically and Medically Considered"、 1893年には自叙伝、"The narrative of a busy life"を出版した。

解剖学の分野でハッサル小体（胸腺小体）やハッサル＝ヘンレ小体（Hassall-Henle bodies）などはハッサルに因んでいる。
