バタヴィ

バタヴィ族（Batavi）は、紀元前1世紀後半から西暦3世紀にかけて現在のオランダのライン川デルタ地域に住んでいた古代ゲルマン人の部族である。バタウィ族とも表記される。この名前は、この部族から徴募されたローマ軍の部隊の名前でもある。部族の名前は、おそらく batawjō （「良い島」、ゲルマン語のbat「良い」、およびawjō「島、水に近い土地」）に由来し、この地域の肥沃度を指す。

この部族は、コンスタンティウス2世(317 - 361) の治世中の355年に言及されているが、彼らの島は当時すでにサリ族によって支配されていた。
