英国の女性歌手ダイドのデビュー・アルバム『No Angel』の収録曲"Thank You"のサンプリングを使用。

エミネムの熱狂的ファンである青年Stan（スタン）が、エミネム（曲中ではエミネムの別称である「スリム」と呼ぶ事から、Stanはエミネムの旧年来のファンであることが窺える）に宛てて綴った3通のファンレターの内容と、男に対するエミネムからの返信がそのまま歌詞（ヴァース部分）となっている。

始めは一般的なファンレターらしい内容で、穏やかに韻を踏んでいる。しかし、エミネムからの返信がないことに苛立ち、内容も声も次第に熱を帯びていく。最終的に死を決意したStanは、自分とエミネムの親密な仲に嫉妬している（とStanが勝手に勘違いした）妊娠中の彼女をさらい、大量の酒を呑み（「I drank a fifth of vodka」）時速150kmを越すスピードで雨中運転しながら、Stanの遺書ともなるテープ・レターとして吹き込む。そして最期の時が来る直前、「どうやってこのテープをエミネムに送ればいいんだ？」と気づくが、トランクの中に閉じ込められた彼女もろとも車ごと川に転落してしまう。

最後の第四ヴァースは、スリム（＝エミネムの分身）からStanに宛てた返信となっており、声も一転穏やかなものに戻る。事故死したカップルのことを新聞で読んだことを思い出し、冷静になるよう男を諭している。しかし、それがその狂信的なファンレターを送り続けたStanであったことに気づくところで曲は終わる。

ファンレターを綴る音や、男が運転を誤り急ブレーキする音、そして川へ転落する際の音がサンプリングされている。

2001年のグラミー賞授賞式にて、ダイドのパートをエルトン・ジョンがピアノで弾き語り、話題となった。

『ローリング・ストーン』誌が選出した「オールタイム・グレイテスト・ソング」では223位にランク・イン[2]。
