ドナルド "タビー" ショウ(1955年生、リード・ヴォーカル)、フィッツロイ "バニー" シンプソン(1951年生)、ロイド "ジャッジ" ファーガソン(1943年生)の三人が、1969年にキングストンのトレンチタウンで結成したヴォーカル・トリオ。三人は年齢差があるが、トレンチ・タウンの同じ学校の幼なじみだった。メンバー間で意見の割れた時は最年長のロイドが判断を下し、そのため「ジャッジ」と呼ばれた[1]。

沿革 編集

作品はラスタファリ運動を基盤にアメリカ帝国主義、植民地主義に抵抗する歌から愛の歌まで、美しいハーモニー(和声)で聴かせる。

1976年のデビュー作「ライト・タイム」は、ルーツ・レゲエの代表作であり、『ジャマイカに本当の試練の日がきた時、ナッティ・ドレッドは絶対に逃げたりはしない』という姿勢を内外に示した[2]。

続く1977年のアルバム「アイス・オン・ファイア」は周囲の意向により、ニューオーリンズで録音され、プロデューサーにはアラン・トゥーサンが迎えられた。レゲエとファンクの融合だったが、賛否両論で商業的に失敗し、次作からはまたルーツ・レゲエに回帰している[3]。

2022年3月29日、ドナルドがコミュニティの集会にいたところを、走行中の車からの武装グループによる襲撃を受け、ドナルドを含む2人が死亡、3人が負傷する事件が起きた[4]。その4日後には、糖尿病を患っていたフィッツロイが死去[5]。瞬く間にメンバーはロイド1人になってしまった。ドナルド67歳没。フィッツロイ70歳没。
