1976年1月28日にミシシッピ州で生まれ、フロリダ州マイアミで育つ。

2006年に入ると、「Def Jam records」傘下のメジャーレーベル「Slip-n-Slide Records」と契約を結び、同年8月6日に、1stアルバム『Port of Miami』をリリース。ビルボードアルバムチャート1位を記録し、70万枚以上を売り上げゴールドディスクを獲得した[1]。

そして2008年3月11日に、2ndアルバム『Trilla』をリリース。前作と同じくアルバムチャートにて初登場1位を記録し、80万枚近くを売り上げゴールドディスクを獲得した。

2009年4月21日には、前作から1年という短いスパンで製作された3rdアルバム『Deeper Than Rap』をリリースし、前作と同じくアルバムチャートにて初登場1位を記録。現在までに全米で40万枚以上を売り上げている。

2010年7月20日には、4thアルバム『Teflon Don』がリリースされた。全米アルバムチャートでは、初登場2位を記録し、全米でゴールド・ディスクを獲得している。

2012年7月31日、5thアルバム『God Forgives, I Don't』がリリースされた。全米アルバムチャートでは、21万8千枚を売り上げ、初登場1位を獲得した。

2014年3月3日、6thアルバム『Mastermind』をリリース。全米アルバムチャートにて、17万9千枚を売り上げ、初登場1位を記録した。11月24日、7thアルバム『Hood Billionaire』をリリース[2]。

2015年6月24日、ジョージア州アトランタ郊外へ男性を監禁し、暴行したとして、誘拐・暴行の容疑で逮捕される[3]。12月4日、8thアルバム『Black Market』をリリース[4]。

2017年3月17日、9thアルバム『Rather You Than Me』をリリース[5]。

2019年8月9日、10thアルバム『Port of Miami 2』をリリース[6]。
