来歴 編集
1922年、イリノイ州ディキャルブに生まれる。スコットランドとアイルランドの血を引く家庭だった[1]。同州ロックフォードの高校を卒業後は、シカゴ美術館附属美術大学へ進学して絵描きを目指したが、学費を稼ぐために始めたモデルの仕事がきっかけで、その後女優を志すようになった[2]。
1943年にハリウッドへ渡り、脇役として数々の映画へ出演。フランク・シナトラやロバート・ミッチャムなど名だたる俳優たちとの共演を重ねてキャリアを構築。徐々に役柄も大きくなっていき、1957年からレイモンド・バー主演のサスペンスドラマ『ペリー・メイスン』のレギュラーキャストとして出演し、幅広い層から人気を得た。同作品での演技も評価され、1959年にプライムタイム・エミー賞の助演女優賞を受賞[3]。1960年にはハリウッド・ウォーク・オブ・フェームも授与されている[3]。
2017年1月26日、カリフォルニア州シャーマン・オークスの自宅で死去[4]。
私生活 編集
1946年に俳優のビル・ウィリアムズと知り合い、結婚した[2]。2人の間には3人の子供が生まれ、その内の一人ウィリアム・カットは後に俳優として活動している。
