グウェン・ガスリー(Gwendolyn Guthrie) (1950年7月9日～1999年2月3日)[2]は、アメリカの歌手・作曲/詞家・ピアニストである[1]。 アレサ・フランクリン(1942年～2018年)やビリー・ジョエル(1949年～)、スティーヴィー・ワンダー(1950年～)、ピーター・トッシュ(1944年～1987年)、マドンナ(1958年～)等のバックコーラスを務めた。 また、ベン・E・キング(1938年～2015年)やアンジェラ・ボフィル（英語版）(1954年～)、ロバータ・フラック(1937年～)等に楽曲提供した[3]。 ガスリーは1986年の「Ain't Nothin' Goin' on But the Rent」と「遙かなる影」( (They Long to Be) Close to You)のカバーで有名になった[4]。

ガスリーは1950年にアメリカ合衆国ニュージャージー州ニューアークで生まれた[1]。 学校ではクラシック音楽を学び、8歳の時に父からピアノを教わり始めた[5]。 1970年代前半には小学校教員として働きながら、Ebonettes[1]やthe Matchmakers等のボーカルグループに参加していた。 1974年にアレサ・フランクリンの「I'm in Love」にバックコーラスで参加した[1]。 ガスリーは友人のValerie Simpsonと共にCMでよく歌うようになった。 当時の恋人だったHaras Fyre(トロンボーン奏者/ベーシスト)の伝手で、ベン・E・キングの「Supernatural Thing」と「Do It In the Name of Love」(1975年)を楽曲提供した[2]。 また、アンジェラ・ボフィルに「This Time I'll Be Sweeter」を提供し、後に多くの歌手がカバーした。 シスター・スレッジ（英語版）の1975年のアルバムに7曲提供し[2]、ロバータ・フラックに「God Don't Like Ugly」を提供した[2]。 1982年にはマドンナのデビューアルバムでバックコーラスを務めた。 スライ&ロビーの影響でダンス音楽に傾倒するようになり、名演を残した事で「パラダイス・ガレージの第一婦人」と呼ばれる。 1983年には、所属DJであるラリー・レヴァン(1954年～1992年)の協力で、最初のヒット曲であるバハマの首都ナッソーのコンパス・ポイント・スタジオで「Padlock」を録音した。 この曲はクラブやラジオで2年後にヒットした。 1986年の「Ain't Nothin' Goin' on But the Rent」が彼女の最も有名な曲であろう[2]。 この曲は後にダンスやヒップホップの音源に使われ、1998年にはフォクシー・ブラウン（英語版）(1978年～)とマイア(1979年～)が、更にユタ・セインツ（英語版）がカバーした。 エディ・マーフィ(1961年～)は彼のお笑い番組で歌詞を引用している。 1986年に「遥かなる影」のカバーもヒットし、全英シングルチャートで25位を記録した[4]。 1988年には未だ禁忌だったAIDSについて「Can't Love You Tonight」で歌った[6]。 ガスリーはゲイ・コミュニティやAIDS患者の提携者だった。 1995年にはM Peopleが「Padlock」をカバーした。

1999年2月3日、48歳で子宮癌で亡くなり[1][5]、ニューアークのフェアーマウント墓地に埋葬された。
